I was on Hannity & Colmes tonight on Fox News (I know, I know — I'm sure many of you think I got what was coming to me by going on Fox). I knew I'd be talking about Hillary Clinton getting heckled at the College Democrats of America convention and the media frenzy around the minor foreign policy disagreements between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama.
I was happy to go on and defend our Democratic nominees for debating important issues while Republicans run to the right and pander to the base.
What I didn't know (because I didn't have a monitor in front of me while I was on live) was that the caption on the screen for the entire segment read HILLARY GETS RUDE WELCOME FROM YOUNG DEMOCRATS FOR AMERICA.
Let's start with the obvious errors. First, we're the Young Democrats OF America, not For (although we're for America, as well). Second, Hillary was speaking at the COLLEGE Democrats of America convention, not the Young Democrats.
But, most importantly, the clip they showed was misleading and that caption was misleading, too. I know what happened. I was there. Hillary was cheered by the College Democrats. The boos you hear are the College Dems booing the lone, middle-aged heckler with a handmade sign. The College Democrats did not boo Hillary Clinton! They booed the heckler and then chanted Hil-lar-y! Hil-lar-y! and cheered as some students escorted the woman out of the room. Senator Clinton was calm and collected throughout, made a joke about it, and then went back to her speech where she outlined policy initiatives important to young people, like universal health care and a new academy for those who want to dedicate their lives to public service.
At the top of the segment, I said it was a lone heckler who was not a participant in the convention but that caption stayed up even as we discussed the war in Iraq and other topics. Anyone who bothered to watch the entire clip of Hillary's speech to CDA would see what really happened. Watch for yourself.
So, in the immortal words of Stephen Colbert: Fox News, you're on notice.

I watched you on Fox news, you are very young and uniformed on worldy matters. The group you belong to reminds me of a group during WWII, you wouldn’t know, but they were taught what to say, when to say it, never have your own opinions, programmed by a party that you will find out down the road never do what they are promising and shouldn’t allowed to aginst america is not the way to go like the democratic party. Hillary Clinton is a hypocrite. two faced. She stole from the whitehouse when she left last time, this is stealing from the american citizen. I feel sorry for you that you only listen to one side and believe everything you hear without really getting the truth, which they don’t want you to know.
You seem like a very sweet, intelligent young woman. However, you are very uninformed. Universal Health Care is NOT a good thing. I have a friend who was born in England, moved here at age 5, and grew up here. His parents moved back to England when his fathers job was through here. My friends uncle died of a heart problem, while waiting for the surgery on a list. Wnen his father got sick and was put on a long list to wait for surgery, my friend brought his father over here, and saved his life. He would have died while on the waiting list. According to his family who lives in England this is common. I have family in Canada who come here for most medical treatment. The waiting lists are to long. People die while on waiting lists or do not get simple medical tests in time. This is the reality. Our system may not be the greatest, but it is the best one around. I can’t afford health ins. because I work for myself out of my home. I have medical care through my county, through my state. I have wonderful medical care. I need a test, I get it immediatly. I have a $10 copay for appointments and medication. It is wonderful and I do not want to go to universal health care. You need to talk to people from these countries and get the facts. As for the war in Iraq, my son is in Bagdahd. He is a soldier in the US Army. I talk to him several times a week. What we hear on most news channels over here is not accurate. It hasn’t been. He tells me what is going on and Fox news is the closest to what is acctually going on over there. We are making progress and I am so tired of people saying this and that when they do not know a single person over there personally. My other son (who is not over there) has his best friend over there. He tells us the same thing. Sure I want these kids, and especially my son home as of yeterday, but I also understand the need to win this war and the importance of control in the middle east. It is the most volatile place on the planet. I have friends from the middle east who have basically fled to this country because of what goes on over there. It is a very frightening place to live. These people need our help. If we pull out, there will be a bloodbath. Then we will be sending our troops back into a more dangerous situation than ever. We must stay the course.
Lisa,
You sure have a lot of friends who just happen to be involved in some way or another to every Republican/Fox Noise talking point. How convenient for you.
My brother-in-law recently returned from Fallujah and Tikrit after serving 2 tours. I’m not sure where your son is currently serving, but let me assure you, it is far from the rosy picture painted by Fox and Friends. Maybe your son doesn’t want to alarm you or maybe you are just another mindless follower of the bile spewed from the fake news channel.
I believe the “misinformed” person here, may actually be you.
Regardless, I thank your son for his courage and wish him and all our troops a safe and speedy return.
Our healthcare system is the best one around? My future father in law, Republican till the day he dies, fell and broke his ankle on his driveway a few weeks ago. He is quite a large man, so he couldn’t stand due to the fact that the ankle was broken, so he had to lie on his back while his wife and kids figured out what to do (I was out of town). Rather than call an ambulance, they decided to have the two sons drag him to their minvan and lift him up into it and then drive him to the hospital. Why? They didn’t want to have to pay for the ambulance they knew their insurance wouldn’t cover.
The irony of this all? He works for Liberty Mutual. He sells health insurance packages to corporations. And his own company wouldn’t have covered his ambulance.
Bang up system we have.
I love it when people become apologists for Big Insurance and Big Pharma, and then admit they can’t afford health insurance themselves. Lisa’s post contains nothing but bullshit.
I would have to tend to disagree, Al portrayed herself as a fine spokesperson for the Young Democrats of America, and I look forward to seeing her on other forums
Keep up the Good Work Al
