As if we needed more evidence to prove that young people matter in this election, the Washington Post today released a brief article summarizing the findings of the latest two studies on young voters:

"About 6.5 million voters younger than 30 voted in this year's primaries and caucuses, according to data compiled by CIRCLE (see turnout state-by-state on an interactive map by clicking here). That's a record figure, according to CIRCLE director Peter Levine, and the first time the youth vote has risen in three consecutive election cycles (2004, 2006 and 2008) since the voting age was lowered to 18 in 1971. CIRCLE's data show that the overall national youth voter turnout rate in the primaries almost doubled in eight years; it was 9 percent in 2000 and grew to 17 percent this year. In addition, of the 17 states in which primary exit polls were conducted in both 2000 and 2008, 16 saw increases in youth turnout, with some states showing a three- or four-fold increase. In Iowa and New Hampshire, for example, the youth vote made up 18 and 16 percent, respectively, of the total number of voters."

The article cites two recent studies on voting patters and young voters from CIRCLE and the Pew Internet & American Life Project. These reports highlight the growing power and presense of young voters at the polls:

  • More than 6.5 million votes under the age of 30 participated in primaries or caucuses
  • Overall National youth turnout doubled over the last 8 years
  • First time since 1971 that youth turnout has increased three election cycles in a row
  • Young Voters now lean Democratic by large margins
  • Democrats have employed the internet and new media more effectively than Republicans
  • More young voters go online to inform themselves about and engage with the campaigns

So not only are more young people people participating, but more are voting Democratic. This research proves there is no longer a question of whether young people can change elections, only whether we will. This year, we must. To make sure this is the year of the young voter, we have to take advantage of unprecedented interest and historic numbers. Do your part to engage young voters and turn them out for Democrats.
