Cassi Peters, Young Democrats of America Rural Caucus Chair met Friday with Courtney Rowe, Assistant Director of Rural Outreach for the United States Senate Democrats, to discuss many of the significant challenges facing rural Americans across the country.
“Meeting with Courtney was a great opportunity,” said Peters. “She provided great insight into what congressional leaders are doing to reach out to rural Americans.”
Rowe pointed out that the main initiative of the Senate Rural Outreach Committee is rural advocacy – ensuring that all Senators are aware of the significant and unique challenges rural Americans are facing.
“During our meeting we discussed the importance of providing a rural voice on all issues, especially health care reform,” said Peters. “Given the higher percentage of uninsured in rural areas, less access to preventatives care, and an aging health infrastructure it’s increasingly important that our congressional leaders take rural America into account while creating solutions.”
Chairwoman Peters plans to continue meeting with progressive rural organizations in hopes of building a strong coalition of groups to amplify the voice of rural youth across America.
“Creating relationships with other rural organizations is critical to our success,” said Peters. “I’m proud that the Young Democrats of America Rural Caucus stands with the Senate Democrats to highlight rural issues and advocate on behalf of rural Americans.”
