YDA is excited to announce that our newest official member is Congressman Tom Perriello, representing Virginia’s 5th CD in the House of Representatives. Congressman Perriello, one of only three Democrats in Congress under the age of 36 (YDA age), made it official by signing up just yesterday with the up and coming Charlottesville/Albemarle County chapter within the Virginia Young Democrats (VAYD).
The Congressman is not just a YD on paper, he also fights for what we believe in everyday. Among many other bright accomplishments for a freshman Rep., Perriello has been profiled as a rising star by MSNBC and recently gained significant recognition for his sponsorship of the much needed Health Insurance Industry Fairness Act. In an appeal for the support of Young Democrats across the nation, Perriello issued this statement directly to YDA members:
“I know the Young Democrats played a crucial role in bringing a new generation of voters and activists into the political process–now we need your help passing this critical, common sense legislation. Call or write your Representative: tell them you stepped up for them in 2008 and in 2010, we need them to step up for the American people by helping to end health insurance monopolies. As a Young Democrat myself, I hope you will stand with me in support of this legislation.”
On the passing of this monumentally bi-partisan legislation, the Congressman wrote:
“This past week, we scored a major victory for common sense, for competition, for consumers and for bipartisanship in the U.S. House of Representatives. The House passed my bill, House Resolution 4626, the Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act, on an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 406-19. I’m proud that my name is on the first truly bipartisan health care reform bill to pass the U.S. House.”
Perriello also gained recognition when he stood up for the passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act in the face of opposition saying he would lose his reelection if he voted for it. To which he responded,
“If I have to choose between national security and reelection, for me that’s easy. It’s national security…”
“I can deal with losing reelection. I can’t deal with being a coward.”
You get the picture. This guy is a winner and a freshman superstar in Congress. The fact that he is one of us just makes it even better. YDA, VAYD and the Charlottesville YD’s are very excited to welcome Perriello to our organization and are proud of the work he does to stand up for his district and fight the good fight that so many shy away from in tough times. Welcome aboard Congressman!
