We are making history!

The battle for health insurance reform in America is 10 days away from its conclusion. Republicans have painted every caricature of reform possible but while they have been busy playing politics and putting personal ambition ahead of the American people, the reality of the need for reform is unchanged; we cannot be the nation that we can and should be if we continue down the unsustainable road of the status quo.

The next 10 days will determine whether America lives up to the true meaning of its creed. The next 10 days will determine our nations ability to compete in the 21st century. The next 10 days are inextricably bound to our national security, for how can we protect our home land if we are not well enough to fight? The next 10 days are about the future of this nation and will either be an indictment or a commendation of our seriousness of being the generation that moves America closer than it has ever been to creating that more perfect union.

Maybe it is you or a member of your chapter, a family member, or a co-worker who knows all-to-well the need for health insurance reform. Maybe you have been dropped by your insurance provider for a pre-existing condition. Maybe your mother has been denied coverage while being treated for cancer. Maybe your neighbor has lost his job and must now face life worrying and praying not to get sick because the out of pocket costs for treatment and care are unimaginable. Polls show that Americans who have health insurance are by and large happy with what they have. However, the need for health insurance reform is not about this moment it is about the unforeseen moments that often find us in life and about the ability of every American to be comforted by the reality that when that unforeseen moment comes the one thing we need not worry about is our ability to remain healthy.

This is that defining moment for our generation. We must stand and fight like we have never fought before. If the election of 2008 was about setting a new course for America, then our role in passing health insurance reform is about showing the wisdom of this new course.

Over the course of the next 10 days we will update this blog often with facts about what is in the health insurance reform bill and how it will effect young Americans. We will ask of you to engage in meaningful actions and contact your members of congress and the senate. Most importantly, we will be asking you to tell your stories and to make your voices heard. If you will stand and fight for the next 10 days and help President Obama pass health insurance reform, a feat that has been almost 100 years in the making, there will never again be a question of the seriousness of this generation or our vision for stronger America.

It was once noted that leadership is taking people where they want to go. Great leadership is taking people where they might not want to go but ought to be. This is the moment where we ought to be as a generation and as a nation. Now, let us dare to be great!
