August 2024 Newsletter

Your YDA August Newsletter

Dear Young Democrats,

Can you feel the excitement in the air? We’re just days away from the Democratic National Convention, and this year is shaping up to be one for the history books. With Kamala Harris leading the charge and Governor Walz stepping into the national spotlight as our Vice Presidential nominee, there’s a renewed sense of energy and purpose in the party. It’s not just about the speeches or the fanfare; it’s about the direction we’re heading as a nation and the impact we can all have together.

This convention is a celebration of our shared values and the hard work that’s brought us here. As we gear up for what’s ahead, staying informed is key. Let’s dive in and stay connected—because together, we’re keeping the momentum going!

The Young Democrats of America were excited to learn of Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to select Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her 2024 running mate.

Throughout his time in office, Walz has routinely fought to better the lives of Minnesotans— providing universal school meals, paid family leave, red flag gun laws, legalization of marijuana, and environmental protections.

In 2023, Walz codified reproductive healthcare as a “fundamental right” in Minnesota by signing the Protect Reproductive Options Act into law. During his time in office, he also signed many LGBTQ+ protection bills into law, including the lifesaving “Trans Refuge” bill.

In the words of the Minnesota Young DFL president and national Young Democrats of America President Quentin Wathum-Ocama:

“Governor Walz has nearly two decades of critical government experience, first as congressman and now as a two term governor who has presided over one of the most consequential and progressive legislative sessions in Minnesota history. His selection sends a clear message that a Harris-Walz administration is ready to deliver for the American people on day one.”

We, the Young Democrats of America, could not be more enthusiastic with Vice President Harris’ decision. We look forward to electing Harris and Walz to their respective offices in November 2024.

Barron’sUS Vice President Kamala Harris’s late entry into the White House race has galvanized young Democrats, a group whose participation will be crucial if the party hopes to defeat Donald Trump in November.

Spectrum News 1 Enthusiasm among young voters has skyrocketed since President Joe Biden stepped down from his candidacy for a second term and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

Garrett Readling, communications director for the Young Democrats of North Carolina, said Harris is “the perfect person to meet the challenges ahead of us,” including gun violence, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, healthcare and income inequality.

“Since young people my age have been engaged in politics, things have been bad,” he said. “It’s been an environment where it’s really easy to be jaded. Where we reach people the best is by giving them something to believe in and something that’s good and genuine. And I think Vice President Harris is doing exactly that.”

Byline News – Kamala Harris has announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, in a move generally viewed by US progressive organisations as a win for young people and left-wing politics more broadly.

Quentin Wathum-Ocama, president of the Young Democrats of America (also Minnesota  Young DFL President), told Byline Times that “Governor Walz has nearly two decades of critical government experience, first as Congressman and now as a two-term Governor who has presided over one of the most consequential and progressive legislative sessions in Minnesota history.

“From massive investments in [kindergarten – 12th grade] education to making college free for families who earn under $80,000, his selection sends a clear message that a Harris-Walz administration is ready to deliver big for the American people on day one.”

The Texas Tribune Some young voters who are upset about the Biden Administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war say they’re still hesitant about the vice president.
