June 2024 Newsletter

Your YDA JuneNewsletter

Greetings, Young Democrats,

As this June comes to a close, we reflect on Pride Month and celebrate the incredible LGBTQ+ individuals who lead us every day in the Young Democrats, the Democratic Party, and across the nation. We pause to acknowledge all those who have stepped into leadership positions and who are continually making history each day, from those who are organizing at the grassroots level to those who are breaking barriers in elected office.

We also recognize that LGBTQ+ rights, particularly trans rights, continue to come under attack. We stand united in our commitment to fight for our trans siblings and ensure that everyone can live authentically and freely. Our struggle for equality and justice continues, and we will never back down in the face of bigotry and discrimination.

Lovett Or Leave It arrives for our first Asheville show ready to listen and learn! Head of the North Carolina Democratic Party Anderson Clayton teaches us about Gen Z, and it sounds so much cooler when she says it. TS Madison and Lovett canonize recent moments in queer history. Lovett tests the locals on nearby news, and the Rant Wheel schools us all in the art of being enraged.

ISTHMUS Youth voters in battleground state could play ‘decisive’ role in November

“The Democratic Party realizes, although they may not admit it all the time, that they need young people in this election,” [Matthew] Lehner [,Chair of the College Democrats of Wisconsin]  says. “Joe Biden won the state by just over 20,000 votes in 2020. Campuses across our state are the margin of victory.”

CBS Sacramento – The Sacramento County Young Democrats hosted a debate watch party in the capital city, offering real-time reactions to President Joe Biden’s performance.

“I think he really touched on the things that are relatively important between the two candidates for young people, like climate change, labor,” said Jo Gardias, a Democratic voter.

“It’s terrifying to think about what could happen if Donald Trump is re-elected,” said Evan Cragin, with Sacramento County Young Democrats.

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT – After a profoundly unsettling debate Thursday night for progressives, the Democratic Party could risk losing a generation of young voters if it does not soon recalibrate, some of those voters said Friday.

Eric Vazquez, president of Wine Country Young Demorcats, said the debate did not change his view of the race or how he is approaching November. But, he said he thinks the debate did “open up a lot of concerns and fear for the future” among people who are not as politically involved. He called those concerns, “valid.”

Not every Democratic voter who watched the debate was so glum.

Logan Warren, 20, who just graduated from SRJC with an AA in political science, was frustrated early in the televised event, wondering why Biden wasn’t making more substantive arguments. That feeling hardened when the two candidates “spent three minutes talking exclusively about their golf swings.” But he argued that Biden made a strong comeback as the debate wore on.

The Diversity and Outreach Committee is working on better understanding our demographic makeup and answer some other burning questions in order to work to provide more additional resources.

The deadline to complete the survey is August 1, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. EST. It is important that you share it so that we get as much data as possible. Once completed, our committee will be able to start implementing our goals.

Were you elected a delegate to the Democratic National Convention? If so, please complete this survey to share your information so we can connect with you and other young delegates in Chicago. Your input will help us coordinate events and activities tailored for young delegates.
