His journey in public service began while he was still in high school, when he was appointed in 2010 to the Indiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council—becoming one of its longest-serving members.

James’s involvement with YDA began in 2018, and since then he has held key leadership roles including Chair of the LGBTQ+ Caucus, Deputy Chief of Staff for Programming & Events, and President of the Indiana Young Democrats. He played a leading role in bringing the 2019 YDA National Convention to Indiana, helping elevate the state’s visibility within the national organization.

Professionally, James has worked across both local and state government to advance housing access, neighborhood revitalization, and equitable development. He recently concluded his service at the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, where he oversaw the allocation of tax credits and federal housing funds. In his next professional chapter, James will be stepping into a chief executive role at a regional economic development organization in Indiana—continuing his commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities across the Midwest.

James earned his bachelor's degree in General Studies from Ball State University through the university’s interdisciplinary option, where he crafted a unique major in Urban Statesmanship—blending coursework in political science, urban planning, and public communication. He is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Public Finance from Indiana University–Indianapolis. He is a proud member of organizations including the Urban Land Institute, NAACP, Sierra Club, Strong Towns, and Congress for New Urbanism, and remains deeply committed to empowering young leaders and strengthening communities through policy and action.
